Everything you need to know about BTT
Basic Theory Test (Singapore) — what it is, who can take it, how to pass, and what to do if you fail.
The Basic Theory Test (BTT) is a driving theory test you need to pass before converting any foreign driving license or before booking Final Theory Test (FTT) or Riding Theory Test (RTT) and a practical driving test (TP Driving Test) administered by a uniformed Traffic Police examiner in Singapore. You may be tested on:
· Traffic signs — warning, prohibition, mandatory and informational signs
· Road markings — double white lines, yellow box junctions, stop lines
· Speed limits — 50 km/h urban, 90 km/h expressways, 40 km/h school zones
· Right of way — junctions, roundabouts, give way rules
· Parking rules — prohibited zones, loading/unloading bays
· Traffic offences & fines — mobile phone use, seatbelts, drink driving
· Driver duties — emergency vehicles, hazard lights, breakdowns
Basic Theory Test (BTT) will be adminstrated at your enrolled driving school (BBDC, SSDC or CDC) on a computer terminal. You have 50 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions.
Passing mark: 45 out of 50 (90%)
You must answer at least 45 of the 50 questions correctly to pass. This means you can afford a maximum of 5 wrong answers. There is no partial credit — each question is either right or wrong.
Key facts:
· Format: 50 MCQ questions, 3 options each, one correct answer
· Duration: 50 minutes (about 1 minute per question)
· Fee: S$7.20 per attempt
· Result: Displayed immediately on screen after submission
· Medium: Computer-based at the driving school test centre
With a first-attempt pass rate of approximately 67% among private candidates, more than one in four candidates fail to pass the BTT on their initial attempt. This reinforces the importance of thorough and effective preparation.
*To maintain a fair, like-for-like comparison, candidates from SSDC, BBDC, and CDC were excluded from this analysis. Participants from Driving Schools are required to pass an internal assessment at the driving school before they can book the BTT. Thus their BTT attempt is not classified as a first attempt, given the possibility of repeated prior failures on the internal assessment.
You are eligible to take the BTT if you meet all of the following requirements:
Age: Must be at least 18 years old to enroll and take the test.
Identification: Must hold a valid NRIC, FIN, or passport with a valid visa/long-term pass.
Enrolment:
You must enrol at one of the approved driving schools BBDC, SSDC or CDC either as a privtae candidate or driving school candidate.
Not eligible: Tourist visa / short-term visit pass holders are not permitted to enrol.
Medical Fitness: Applicants over 65 or pregnant learners may need a doctor's certification letter.
Eyesight: Must pass basic eyesight and color-blindness checks at the driving center.
No, you cannot convert your foreign driving licence to a Singapore driving licence without taking the Basic Theory Test (BTT).
All conversion applicants must pass the BTT at one of the authorised driving school (Bukit Batok Driving Centre, ComfortDelGro Driving Centre, or Singapore Safety Driving Centre). After passing, you can apply for conversion at the Traffic Police Test Centre.
You'll also need:
· A valid foreign driving licence
· At least six months' driving experience from the date of issue of the foreign licence
· To be at least 18 years old and pass a basic eyesight test
There is no mandatory waiting period between BTT attempts. You may rebook your next BTT test as soon as slots are available — typically within 1–4 weeks, depending on demand.
Before addressing the choice itself, it helps to understand the process: all candidates, whether private or school-enrolled, must pass both the Basic Theory Test (BTT) and the Final Theory Test (FTT) before they are issued a provisional driving license, which is valid for a limited period within which the practical test must be completed. The key differences between the two routes lie in flexibility, cost, and — increasingly — how long the entire process takes.
Private candidate
· You can book the BTT and FTT directly once you feel ready, without needing to clear an internal school assessment first.
· Study at your own pace, whenever and wherever you want, using resources such as the BTT Lah mobile app, which includes an AI study guide for your theory tests.
· You engage a private instructor for practical lessons, generally paying only for the lessons and test booking fees, with no school enrolment or course package costs — making this the more affordable route overall.
· Practical test slots booked through a private instructor are typically obtained faster, as they are not subject to the same centralised booking crunch faced by driving schools.
· Best if you want full control over your study schedule and a faster, more cost-effective route to getting licensed.
Driving school candidate (e.g. BBDC, CDC, SSDC)
· You must pass the school's in-house theory evaluation (often conducted on a fixed desktop system at the centre) before you are permitted to book the actual BTT/FTT.
· You're tied to the school's learning platform, lesson schedule, and practice process, which offers considerably less flexibility than studying independently.
· Driving schools face significant demand for practical test slots, and booking systems have been repeatedly targeted by automated booking bots. In response, schools have suspended the accounts of candidates found using such bots, and legitimate candidates are often left competing for the few slots that remain.
· Because of this slot scarcity, some driving schools now charge a premium for expedited booking packages that offer candidates a better chance of securing earlier practical test dates.
· As a result, the overall time to obtain a driving license through a school is typically longer than through a private instructor, and the total cost — factoring in enrolment, theory lessons, course fees, and any expedited booking charges — is generally higher as well.
· This route may still suit candidates who prefer a structured, classroom-style learning environment and are prepared to accept the additional time and cost involved.
In summary: if your priority is to obtain your driving license within a shorter timeframe and at a lower overall cost, engaging a private instructor is generally the more efficient and economical choice. Driving schools may be worth considering primarily for candidates who value structured instruction over speed and cost savings.
Private vs. School Candidate — BTT Registration
Candidate Type
What It Means
Cost Impact
Private Candidate
You self-learn and only use driving school's facilities to sit the Basic Theory Test (BTT) itself.
Lower cost — you pay only the BTT test, no course package.
School Candidate
You enrol in driving school's full structured course (lessons + test), rather than using them for testing only.
Higher overall cost, as it bundles lesson packages with the test fee.

Study Strategy
Six Steps to Pass BTT
Proven methods that significantly improve pass rates for all candidates.
Step 01
Read BTT Lah's AI study Guide First
Read daily and memorise by hard all numerical facts — speed limits, fines, distances.
Step 02
Learn Signs by Shape
Triangle = Warning, Red circle = Prohibition, Blue circle = Mandatory, Rectangle = Information.
Step 03
Master Key Legal Terms
Give way = yield, Right of way = priority to proceed, Stopping distance = total distance to stop, Braking distance = distance after braking begins.
Step 04
Practice BTT Lah's e-Trial Test daily
At least 50 questions a day for 10 days. BTT Lah uses AI where wrong answers get repeated automatically until you get them right.
Step 05
Focus on Number-Based Questions
DIPS Urban roads 50km/h, Expressways 90km/h, School zones 40km/h, Following distance 3-second rule. These account for ~15% of marks.
Step 06
Rest Well & Read Carefully
Arrive early. Read every word. Pay close attention to absolute terms: "always", "never", "must", "at least". Never rush.
